How to Activate your NetID and UM account?
“Activating your NetID is the key to your success at UM.”
The whole activity is divided into two parts(for your convenience).
- Finding and logging in with your NetID
- Activating your UM connect students Email
We will go through these processes one by one.
Part one: Finding and logging in with your NetID
There are specifically two types of ID numbers that the new students need to remember right from the start; their student ID number and their NetID number.
The student ID number starts with ‘790’ and is a nine-digit ID that helps the staff and the faculty of the University to identify each individual with their database system.
The NetID is a kind of username that is assigned to the student that allows them access to any various online UM systems and applications. It doesn’t help in the identification of any student in any way.
Before the students can get access to cyber bear or activate their respective UM ID, they must have access to their NetID.
We have mentioned down some certain steps that need to be followed to get access to your unique NetID.
● Obtain your NetID
- ○ Open a web browser and visit login.um.edu
- ○ Click on the link ‘What’s my NetID?’ available below the ‘username and password’ column.
- ○ You’ll be required to enter your Last name, your birthday, and the security characters(password).
- ○ You’ll be displayed with your NetID(for eg, pb123456).
- ○ Click on the continue option and you’ll be redirected to the login screen of UM.
Note: The default password is the /of six digits of your student ID number.
Students who have chosen student record confidentiality in cyber bear will be required to contact the registrar’s office or IT central in order to gain access to their NetID.
● Login to your NetID for the first time
When you log in to your NetID for the very first time, you will be prompted to change your initial password and set a security question.
The security question will be necessary to verify you when you forget your NetID password and want to reset it.
○ Enter your NetID and the initial password)i.e the last six digits of your student ID) at the UM login page.
○ Then click on ‘OK’ or ‘ Continue’.
○ At the time of your first login, you’ll be prompted to change your initial password and set up a new security question.
To change your password
- i. Enter your current password i.e the last six digits of your student ID.
- ii. Enter a new password minimum of six characters(select a strong one)
- iii. Confirm the new password by reentering it.
○ You’ll be required to add a security question
i. Choose a question from the dropdown list.
ii. Enter your preferred answer(Note: answers are case-sensitive).
○ Click on ‘Next’ or ‘Continue’ and you’ll be redirected to the UM login page
Part two: Activating your UMconnect student Email account
It is compulsory that all the students start to use their UM email account right from the start. They can communicate with the UM faculty and staff members using only the specific UM email account.
Official notifications from UM are directly sent to this email as well as this email address is used by the professors to get in touch with the students regarding official announcements related to their courses.
We have collected and mentioned down some important steps following which you can easily activate your UMconnect student’s email account without any hurdles.
● Get your UMontana Alias
The ‘UMontana Alias’ is your unique official university email address that you’ll be required to give out to the university contacts for any activity related to the university.
Every message sent on this email is automatically transferred to your UMconnect email account.
- ○ Open a web browser on your device and visit the website cyberbear.umt.edu and click on ‘login’.
- ○ Enter your NetID and password at the login page.
- ○ You can manage your email account by clicking on personal information.
- ○ You’ll get your UMontana Alias(for eg, firstname.lastname@umontana.edu)
● Activate your UMconnect Account
- ○ Open your web browser and visit the website www.umt.edu/umconnect and click on enter.
- ○ Enter your NetID and password at the login page.
- ○ Write down the password while connecting for the first time.
- ○ Click on the activate option.
- ○ You’ll be required to enter the account information on the 365 screens. You will have to write down the password you changed at the Account setup screen.
- ○ Check and accept the office 365 service agreement and privacy statement.
- ○ You’ll get access to your UMconnect account and you can change your password now.
● Access your UMconnect account
The UMconnect account is a microsoft-hosted Windows live account having a unique username and password. UMconnect and Microsoft are connected with a bond of trust that allows the students to access the university faculties and staff.
How to access UMConnect
One can access UMConnect and their services by using the following secure channels
● login.umt.edu
● www.umt.edu/umconnect .
Logging in to UMConnect account by login.umt.edu
- From your internet enabled computer, open a web browser and visit login.umt.edu
official website. - On the displayed page ,enter your unique netID and your personal password then click login.
- On the homepage button, click “UMConnect student email .“
- Click continue on the next page in order to access the server.

- From your internet enabled computer, open a web browser and visit www.umt.edu/umconnect .
- A login page will be displayed.
- Enter netID and personal password on the login page then click “login”
- Click continue on the next page displayed in which one will access the server.
If one accesses UMConnect through other websites ,one is required to use the “window live”
FAQs
Q. How to change your NeTID password?
Visit login.um.edu and you can change your password. The old password expired every 365 days for security purposes. We suggest creating a complex and hard password for your NetID.
How to change NetID password by sesurity question
- In Order to change or reset a password in UMConnect, a verification process is done through login.umt.edu
- One has to select and answer a security question.
- When one hasn’t set a security question, then one is required to provide a valid universal ID card.
For 3 unsuccessful login attempts the account is disabled for 15 minutes.
